One of my most asked questions is 'what time of year should I do senior portraits?' So, since it's currently June and starting to warm up, let's talk about summer senior pics!

Summer is one of the best times of year to schedule senior portraits, in my opinion. In Tulsa, it does get hot, but if you play it right, it shouldn't be THAT bad. We have ways of keeping it cool(ish).

Let's talk about the pros (and cons) of taking your senior pics in the summer of Oklahoma.

Why Summer Works So Well for Senior Portraits

  • Warmer temps mean cooler clothes. Dresses, shorts, tank tops. We all love a good summer vibe and I love taking photos outside in the sun. You can wear your most comfy outfits in the summer without being too chilly.
  • Oklahoma weather is more predictable in summer. We know it's hot, but it's pretty consistent. Spring and fall fluctuate in temperature and rainfall. Summer storms are pretty easy to work around.
  • That tan, baby! You've probably worked on the tan since they day school let out. Let's show it off!  (And my pale baddies look amazing too with their natural skin glowing in the sunlight!)
  • The flowers are blooming. Spring is too wet, fall is too dry, and winter is too cold. But summer? That's when all the color happens. Wildflowers start blooming (in Oklahoma anyway) in the early summer, and the bright blooms of curated gardens carry us through the rest of the season. If you like the flora, this is your season.
  • Longer days in the summer mean more shooting time! Once fall hits, the time starts getting shorter, which means we need to hurry and get you to me before the sunsets. In summer, the sunset doesn't even happen until close to 9pm! That gives us plenty of time to plan, play, and take all the gorgeous evening pics we want without having to worry about losing the light. I love a longer day!
  • Summer is just more relaxed. When you're in school, there's always something going on, especially during senior year. There's more graduation prep, more events, more activities, more homework, more practice and rehearsals. Summer is just a little more less on edge, so you only have to worry about the one thing...having a great time at your senior session!

So When Should Seniors Book Their Sessions?

I book all year long. Some people book their sessions 6 months in advance just to get it on the calendar.

But, honestly, most people book one to two months in advance. This will give you plenty of time for us to figure out what we'll be doing together, and for you to prep your outfits, hair appointments, and adjust work schedules.

You can always go on my online calendar and see what my upcoming schedule looks like. You can find that HERE.

Now the cons for doing a summer session

  • Plain and simple, it's hot. Oklahoma summers are no joke, but there are ways to stay a little cooler. We'll do everything we can (shooting indoors some, taking breaks in the AC, changing indoors, water and fans, etc) to make you comfortable!
  • And it's humid out there. I can handle the heat, but the humidity gets ya. I'll make sure your not sweaty in your photos and can definitely photoshop the little frizzy hairs you're going to get with the humidity. :)
  • Bugs. Oh yes. Even worse than the humidity. Spiders, ticks, and mosquitoes LOVE the Oklahoma summers. I always carry bug spray on me in case we're in tall grass. And I'll warn you if I see something crawling. Eep!
  • The late sunset. Yes, I named it as a pro before because long days are easier days, IMO. But that also means we won't be shooting any perfect sunset photos. Because, I love you, but I'm not going to be out working at 9pm. lol
